A BC LIONS GAME FOR A HOCKEY FAN
My good friend Dave M. has been trying to convince me to become a Lions fan for a long time. Personally, I’m not a big football fan, but I do love sports and I consider myself a BC girl. So hey, why not give it a try?
It just so happened that another friend of mine, Tom, was having a birthday yesterday and got a bunch of tickets for all his friends. We started off with a few shots of my favourite tequila each, and then… to the Lions game!
After going to numerous Canucks game at GM Place, I was completely floored by how much bigger BC Place was. The sheer number of empty seats was surprising too. I was happy to see a lot of orange in the crowd, but it really did seem like only a quarter of the crowd actually knew what was going on. I think everyone else was there to drink.
I was also surprised by the selection of food… not nearly as much as at GM Place. There were fewer stoppages in play (no “advertising breaks”), and definitely less ads and commercials in the stadium. That was actually really nice. I think hockey would be much more enjoyable without the flashing ads and loud commercials all the time. I will also say this — the DJ was way better at the Lions game.
Not just that, but the Lion claws and the orange were much more eye catching and “fierce” than the blue Canucks colours and the Orca. I mean really… an Orca?! I decided to get myself a Lions hat, and I tried my best to pay attention to the game. Geroy Simon was definitely one to watch, and (in my very little football knowledge), it seemed like the Lions played pretty good defense last night. Lions beat the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 40-10.
So Dave, yes, I had a lot of fun. I’m not sure if I’m going to convert to a Lions fan anytime soon, but I really had a great time. I’ll always be a ‘Nucks fan at heart, and I think I only have room for one sports team in me
After the game, the group headed to Library Square for some drinks and dancing. What a funny name for a club. And it was 80s night too. Perhaps a little too “cougar-ish” for me, a little too old school as well, but we still had an awesome time.
Good night!

Not a Lions Fan yet, well im done working on you yet either
Totally awesome, just to date my self to the 80′s. and i love those 80′s cougars
. So yes your right Geroy Simon is the best receiver in the league, and the best all time receiver in Lions history, (well the most yards). And yes their Deffence smoked the Tie Cats, 10 sacks. And yes the orange rocks. Yes I love the CFL, i grew up with my Dad taking me to the old lions games way back in Empire stadium, which was an open air stadium by play land. Those nights when i was
a kid you could see the mountains to the north and playland running to the east, there was a Nallys chip section in the end Zone where the local kids could get in with proof of purchase of five Nalley’s bags of chips (good deal, could you imagine the Cunucks doing that.). I saw many memories there, I saw Terry Fox night (he a personal hero of mine), he was aready dying then and they flew him in for a game and a tribute, very special night. Crazy George (google him) came in every night in a unique way, on an elephants or helicopter etc. The field was open and after the game all the kids would run down onto the field and get autographs and souvenirs from the players, i got a few sweaty arm bands in my day, just imagine jumping on the ice at a cunucks game after the end of the third, security would kill you.
Perhaps because in lives in the memory of an eight year old boy, but i have never been or seen a more magical sporting event than those summer night at empire stadium. The
CFL boomed in the 80′s and started dying in the 90′s, bad marketing and a poorly thought out USA expantion that almost killed the league. The lions games at BC place never had that felling, although it was cool in the fifty thousand ticket sell outs, but the magic was gone.
The good news is the league started to come back in the 2000′s, better marketing and good coverage from the media and TSN helped. the league has plans to expand to more Canadian cities, a team in the maritimes will really make it a coast to coast league. Theres also a new open air roof going on BC place, im hoping ill take my boys. All in all the futures bright for the CFL.
Remember the CLF is a 100 year old league and full of history and tradition, and a fantastic entertaining product for the price. It predates the NFL by about 60 years and is truly a Canadian product, that why i love it the most, its not there game, its our game.
So i think you should give the lions some more chances, learn the rules, read the history, whatch the play offs this years.
and if that not enough check out this site.

Heh heh, the main reason there’s less ads/commericals/advertising breaks for the Lions is, well, hardly anyone watches CFL compared to NHL.

Holy crap Macleod!
You’re right though, I felt like I needed to know the history and the team a LOT more when I was watching the game. I’m sure that’s half the enjoyment
Haha Mike…

Thats so funny to see so many empty seats at a football game. Everyone loves their football here in Colorado. I’m completely opposite, football is my favorite spectator sport by far.
