Short post tonight since I’m feeling a bit rundown.

Roberto Luongo has been named Captain of the 2008/2009 Vancouver Canucks team. Wow.

Willie Mitchell, Ryan Kesler, and Mattias Ohlund were named alternate captains, wearing the “A”. But here’s the big stitch… Lou can’t wear the “C” on his jersey, according to official NHL rules.

I can’t help but feel a little weird about this. How is he going to inspire the team on he ice in key, time sensitive situations? Will he really go all the way from his net to talk to the referees on disputed calls? Will his presence on the ice be enough to compensate for not being at the bench during the game at times?

Lou’s a big fan favourite and I’m really happy for him. A lot of fans are behind this decision, but I’m still going to feel weird about it.

I wear the “C” on my Trevor Linden jersey proudly, so I can only hope that Luongo can live up to be as inspiring a captain as Linden was in his time.

What do you think?

I’m not much of a hockey fan, but wouldn’t this be telling that the Canucks seriously need to get better offensive players, if the captain of the team is the goalie? :|

  2. macleod Says:

sigh………….. i really thought Mitchell fit the bill. I think an A on Lou would have been really cool.

  3. Amy Says:

Miss604 on her blog posted a quote from Alanah at Canucks and Beyond, who had pasted an entire section of the rulebook on her post, saying: “Bottom line—he can’t act as captain during the course of the game, so his assistants will take those responsibilities.”

  4. Urban Dweller Says:

I think its a good idea. He can not interact with the refs. I believe Willie Mitchell will be designated to do that. Also I think this speaks volumes as to how much he means to this team. Weird move? Yes definitely. It will be tough to be as inspirational as Linden, only time will tell.

As for the “C”, I think they should put it on his mask somewhere. Go Canucks Go!!!

Mike, it doesn’t really mean that, I think it’s just that Luongo has been so loved by fans and become such a fan favourite that for some people, they think he should be captain.

macleod, yeah I totally agree. I would’ve liked to have a good Canadian captain… but hey, Lou is Canadian too so I guess he qualifies ;)

Amy, yep you’re right. I just am not sure if I want someone as a captain who needs assistants to pick up a captain’s responsibilities. It feels like it is more of an “honourary” captain then.

UD, I’d love to see a C on his mask :) Definitely!

So, What happens when he gets pulled?

  7. jamie Says:

From what I vaguely remember from reading the rulebook a while back, he can’t have any privileges that a captain normally has but there is nothing that explicitly states he can’t be officially made captain. So, he won’t be taking any ceremonial faceoffs or doing any discussing with officials. These duties will be given to the assistant captains.

I was talking with my father about it and he believes the label will help Luongo stay on top of his game with the added responsibility that he loves. My response was that at his level and also if it were me, he should be playing at 100% regardless of that label. I don’t really think having him named as team captain should have any effect on his attitude. He might have that locker room role of inspiring his teammates attached to captaincy but really this kind of hierarchy should be delegated to the team as a whole, where teammates inspire teammates as equals (at least the way I see it).

As a side note, I think Chicago doesn’t have an official team captain named.

  8. Duane Storey Says:

I think it’s nothing more than a marketing decision to try and get more people into the seats. If he can’t act as a captain during a game, there’s really no point calling him a captain. It’s just confusing, and I can’t see it helping the Canucks at all.

  9. Vancity Allie Says:

Yeah, it seems totally like a marketing decision to me too.

  10. Adrian Says:

I think it’s awesome that Luongo was named captain…..one problem though! goalie’s cannot skate past the blue line unless they are going to the bench. This makes is impossible for Luongo to chase down the Ref’s to dispute calls.

Still, it’s pretty neat that the team is giving him the title. I agree with Urban Dweller, if I were Luongo, I’d get a giant “C” painted on the top of my mask…partly because goalies can’t wear the “C” on their jersey either, there’s just no justice!
