OUT OF COMMISSION
As part of my ongoing movie project, I’ve had to upgrade my computer. It’s pretty tough crunching HD video files on my single core, 2 GB RAM machine. That, and the PC I built 5 years ago that was top of the line is now pretty archaic, and even photo editing and blogging moves at a sluggish pace.
I’ve been able to pick out some pretty cool new parts (Quad core, 8 gigs of RAM yeah!), but it’s going to take a while to upgrade and do a complete wipe and re-install of my operating system.
So, I unfortunately won’t have access to my computer and by association, my photos.
I’m hoping to be back up and running and blogging by Monday.
Thanks for understanding! In the meantime, you can check out some of my popular posts, or my Flickr page.

I’m right there, as well, on having to upgrade, it’s insane how slow ‘fast’ gets….Just gotta figure out what kind of ram this thing takes

it’s been the best strategy of mine ever since I started using computers as a little geek; make as far a leap in computer power/speed/etc as you can afford, and then you can coast that for 4-6 years before it starts to become insufferable for what applications and games you play/use it for. Then when I get an upgrade, suddenly those last few games that I could barely manage to run are like new again, as I can max out the settings!
Mind you I’ve become a console gamer so I have a lot less pressure to get a new rig; but Photoshop and Aftereffects ALWAYS want more power. They’re goldfish – always getting as big as the tank can be.

Quad core will definitely help things out if the program you use supports multi-core. IIRC Adobe CS3 products do. What video card did you get?

Hey guys thanks for the advice.
Raj, it’s true. Every year it seems like you have to upgrade or be left behind.
Mike, yeah I usually do an upgrade every 3-5 years or so
So far it’s worked out well for me… I’m usually not TOOOO far behind the curve. I love being able to build PCs myself… saves so much hassle!
dsiglin, I have CS3 right now but I’m probably going to upgrade to CS4 soon. I really like Premiere, as a consumer level video editing program. I can’t remember what video card I have at the moment… I just kept mine from two years ago. I want to upgrade it next year once programs can take advantage of the GPU.

So I take it your upgrade went through smoothly?

Even if your PC is 5 years old, it should do most basic photoediting very well, well ofcause if it’s high rendered pictures or long video files ..etc.
I wonder if you have a good antispyware program? Note that all freeware software has spyware in it, even if it’s antivirus, browsers, antispyware etc.
To get even more speed, diable internet and disable firewall, antivirus programs etc, as they will slow the PC down.

Pretty sure the best thing for crunching HD video is a Mac. Final Cut Pro kicks the pants off Adobe
