PEOPLE PHOTOS
One of my favourite subjects to take photos of is people. There’s something about capturing someone’s essence… their beauty, their light, their energy… with a camera.
I’ve never taken any photography classes; I haven’t even read any photography books or tutorials. Everything I do is just guest and test with a camera and cross my fingers that it turns out. It leads to a ton of unused photos (my computer tells me I have over 30,000 photos, just over 500 gigs) and only a few good ones.
I’ve been fortunate enough to know some beautiful people in my life, both inside and out, and that makes picture taking much, much easier. I also was fortunate enough in university to be hired for some amateur photography.
Lately I’ve gotten more into shooting sports and nature, but you know what? I miss photographing people. And I’m going to focus on that more over the next coming months,
Here are a couple photos of some wonderful people I’ve met over the years.
Marisa… so beautiful! She’s got such a great smile.
An old fisherman in Cadiz… the old man by the sea.
Ashlie doing a great fashion shoot.
Mother and daughter in their own happy moment.
A man plays on the streets of Rome, Italy.
Kelly has the most fantastic green eyes.

Erin the schoolteacher. Enough said!

Janet hides behind some leaves.
Sabrina smiles with all her heart!

Chantel is stunning surrounded by nature.
Father and son. (My dad and brother)
Peter is drop dead gorgeous.
Black and white hat…
Eyes…
The Puck Nuts hockey team… I took their team photo for the 2008-2009 season last night at Burnaby 8 Rinks.. what a bunch of good looking guys!
That’s it for now… now, off to Amy’s Christmas sweater party!

How do you find approaching people to take their pictures? My friends are so hesitant and I’m so hesitant with strangers.

Man how come none of my teachers were like Erin? Damn it!
Great shots. The people I shot are usually friends. Since we know each other well I can usually bring out their personalities. But I’m horrible at shooting total strangers.
Oh I moved my blog to WordPress. Drop by to say hi sometime!

Wow I hadn’t seen any of these before, and they’re quite awesome!
Now you’ve got “male model” in your blog tags, haha! That might start getting some interesting traffic here…

@Loxy: Smile and be cute about it. No joke. If you’re alive and animated, they’re more likely to be too. Alcohol also helps. As for approaching people, think about it this way: people are vain; most love their pictures being taken, so get on in there. You’re doing them a favor.

Tyler, thanks so much! You take amazing landscape photos I could never take.. so I think you’re ahead of me since you haven’t even tried many portraits yet
Loxy, usually they approach me and ask me to take their photos
I don’t really approach strangers and take their photos… but if I had to I’m sure I would just ask as sweetly as possible
It helps to be a female photographer for sure! It would help if I had business cards or something official too.
Tawcan, yeah we all wish for teachers like Erin eh
Congrats on your big move to WordPress! I’ll drop by!
Mike, thanks! Haha yeah I’m not sure if a big influx of people looking for male models would be good or not
Jeremy, yep, you’ve pretty much hit it on the head.

In the past when I wanted to take photos of people or of their animals, I would just straight up ask them
I did that a couple times on hikes where I thought the person and their dog looked great so I asked if I could take their photo. I have not had someone turn me down yet.. Then again I’m really shy and normally don’t do that either lol.

Incredible Allie… The man playing the guitar in Rome is so rad. I looked at it for like 5 minutes! I liked it so much in fact I did the ole control click on the mac and saved the photo and it’s now my computer background… Hope you don’t mind!
I’m trying to get into photography and my little sony cybershot just isn’t getting the job done so I’ll have to pick your brain sometime about what to get.
Can’t wait to see more photos!

Wow.. you have an amazing talent there. You pretty much just inspired me to pick up my camera and get back out there! I love photography, and i have a decent Canon Rebel XT from 3 years ago that doesn’t get much use anymore these days..
Keep pointing and clicking that shutter Allie, I can’t wait to see more.
