LOCKDOWN
For some personal reasons, I’ve had to cancel all my trips for this month only (yes, sadly including WordPress Whistler and my Baker trip
). This is indeed a very tumultuous time.
I have a feeling I’m going to go stir crazy! So much of last year was spent exploring… trying new things. It makes me sad that I’m going to have to start this year so reserved, but unfortunately there is no other option.
What are some fun things an adventurous girl who likes sports, photography, hockey, and the outdoors can do in the meantime for cheap over the next month?
Any ideas?

Eww that sucks. I’m going to Baker this weekend with bunch friends. We’re renting out a cabin, should be lots fun. 3 years ago we did the same thing but I was trying to learn how to board then. That was kinda a disaster. This time around I’ll be able to rip down the slopes on my tele setup. So excited.
If you’re a cheapass like me you should consider joining the Varsity Outdoor Club (www.ubc-voc.com). There are tons of advertised trips going on basically every weekend:

Basically you pay for gas and food. Members can borrow gear for free.

What about snowshoeing? I haven’t gone but I hear it’s cheap!

That sucks, hope things work themselves out for you.
Maybe cross country skiing? Never tried it but people tell me it’s fun. You can usually hire snowshoes cheaply, try MEC maybe?

You like xbox, right? You could try to get the gold cross on COD4

Bummer about Whistler! Was looking forward to having two D90′s in the room
Hope things work out and you don’t get cabin fever!

I’d like to recommend something, but considering I’m not all that adventurous to begin with and now in possession of a glass left knee (the repair job for my ruptured ACL I had in Feb is all for naught – word on the street is that I have torn the tendon from the graft site), I pretty much kick it back old skool now.
Mind you, you do know of my current addiction… so there is always that. =)

There’s geocaching (http://www.geocaching.com/), it covers the adventurous and outdoors part. All you have to do is add a camera, a hockey stick, and turn it into a sport.
The last part is a little tricky, maybe you could come up with ‘Xtreme-Geocaching’ by stashing geocaches in perilous places or something.

Just throwing out the suggestion that you can go on daily “photo walks” – I’ve just learnt of this concept from an old classmate… Basically they force themselves to go for a walk (or get somewhere further away by bus or car, then walk around that area) and just snap photos. Be it candid people-in-life, still life, landscapes, or that strange splodgy looking thing growing between the sidewalk cracks… In other words, just getting out there and having fun with the ‘hunt’ of interesting things to take a photo of.
Knowing that you’re a shutterbug, this should be right up your alley – you could photog Vancouver’s lesser seen facets (we’ve all see the skyline photos everywhere – but what about that tiny park here or there?)

Photowalks are always fun. Lot’s of places to go in Vancouver and the surrounding area. So I agree with mike’s recommendation.
I’ve heard snowshoeing is fairly cheap to do too. We’ve been wanting to try it this year too.
Sorry you cant make it out to WCWhistler, we’re both looking forward to meeting you heh.

I recently read an interesting article about ‘urban exploration’ in Wend magazine: http://wendmag.com/303/under
You could try and find some old abandoned places around the city to explore
PS – Its only 8 days into the New Year and you are ‘stir crazy?” haha!

Agreed on photowalks that could be a good one..when it’s not pouring.
Skating at the Olympic Oval(I’ve been wanting to do that for awhile now!)
Rockband/Hot Shots Golf Tournaments. Collage making..(haha) Reconnecting with old friends over tea( good for the soul)

Agreed you are marvelous with the camera
Go on shoot some photos, that could be both adventurous and fun! Scrap booking, I hear that can be fun. Um and I agree with Emily Rockband 2 is a great cheap fun time especially when drunk

“I believe in taking risks.”
Interesting that you say that allie yet you have to cancel plans due to “personal reasons”.
Perhaps some irony?
Maybe if you did not take so many silly risks you would not have to cancel plans.
hmmmm. maybe you’ll get smarter when you get more mature.

Sometimes things happen in life that you can never really plan for, no matter how prepared you are. I consider myself to be someone who is very well prepared for many aspects of life.
This time it is different. Once I am able to make more educated decisions about what to do, I can start going on trips again and living the life I like to live. For now though, the smartest thing for me to do is sit tight. I’ll still be taking risks, just in different ways.
Thanks for dropping by, I really appreciate your feedback. It’s true, I really do have a long way to go in terms of maturity.

Save up your money for roller derby in the spring!

I’m in much the same boat. Over the summer I was getting very excited about the prospect of a heli trip in AK this season. The way everything went down, I ended up having to scale the entire season back.
