TOP 10 REASONS WHY CANUCKS FANS HAVE IT HARDER THAN ANY OTHER FANS IN THE NHL
First, before I begin, let me say that I am not off the bandwagon. I’m always ON the Canucks bandwagon. I’ve stuck with them through thick and thin and every single year I believe that they will somehow win the Cup that year. I still watch or listen to every game and root for the boys. I’ll never give up on them.
However, I believe that Canucks fans are a special breed. We are put through a lot. Yet somehow we always find a way to cheer them on. We may possibly be the most frustrated fans in the league.
So therefore I present to you…
TOP 10 REASONS WHY CANUCKS FANS HAVE IT HARDER THAN ANY OTHER FANS IN THE NHL
10. Trevor Linden retired. (Sorry, I had to put it in
)
9. Trying to get tickets to a Canucks game requires you to either take out a loan on your house or beat down scalpers over the head with a bat and run.
8. The majority of seats in the lower bowl are filled with suits who don’t wear jerseys, don’t cheer, arrive halfway into the first period and walk out with 5 minutes in the game left, blocking everyone’s view.
7. We had to deal with Mark Messier.
6. Our players are always injured in the most crucial times.
5. Our players rarely win fights.
4. We have a “third period” Achilles heel where we either a) If the Canucks are down, they play their hardest hockey of the game in the third period when it is too-little-too-late or b) If the Canucks are winning, they find some way to lose in the third period, usually in the dying seconds.
3. A player is acquired and is heralded as the team’s saviour or a player comes back from injury and is heralded as the team’s saviour.. in both cases fans are often left feeling disappointed with the result.
2. The Canucks give away the puck more than any other team in the league.
And the number one reason why Canucks fans have it harder than any other fans in the NHL…
1. When arguing with a Toronto Maple Laffs fan about which team is better, all they say is, “Well at least my team has won a Stanley Cup!”… then we hang our heads in shame, swallow down the acrid bile that rises in our mouths just thinking about the Leafs, and admit that yes, our team has never won a Stanley Cup.
———-
Yes, I’m mostly just joking about all of this. But — please Canucks, please start playing smarter hockey. Please stop turning the puck over. Please find some chemistry in your lines. Please start winning at home! We’re sticking by you guys and we’re trying to be patient.
I hope we can make a run for it here in the last stretch here before the playoffs.
Go Canucks Go!
Do you have any additions to my list?

I haven’t gone to a game in like 2 seasons! Though I have never been to a game we didn’t win. Funny how that works eh?
I miss watching Gino fight!
I miss my 94 playoff towel

You could argue most of these same points for Toronto Fans…
They had Sundin, haven’t won a cup in 40+ yrs (last one was in 1967)… does anyone actually remember it
Looking back the Canucks are actually up on the Leafs for year end results. After 1967 (last year of the original 6) the records are virtually even for the Leafs and the Canucks :
Results since ’67: L / C
* Stanley cup: 0 / 0
* Division championships: 5 / 5
* Conference championships: 0 / 2
I’m a RedWings (always have been) so I won’t gloat about it to much here – all I can say is “14 cups since ’67″

It’s funny you mention #9. Pre-lockout, a buddy of mine won a contest on ‘NW that got him two tix to watch the Canucks play Montreal (actually two seats in the pressbox to be exact) and then a chance to win a trip to Montreal via an on-ice contest.
To cut a long story short, he won the contest and took me with him to Montreal to watch the Canucks play there. As we didn’t really have much time in Montreal with how the ‘nucks planned our trip, we simply went back to the bar in our hotel after the game (same hotel the team stayed in) and got into a discussion with a guy about how we figured it would be easier for us to catch them play in a different city. Not knowing this guy worked for the ‘nucks, we really got into a constructive debate as to how it was easy to score two tickets cheap at Shoppers or whereever during the Keenan years and that since Burkie had taken over, it was next to impossible.
Anywho, I still to this day find it impossible to get good tickets although with the way the team is playing as of late, this may not be a problem for much longer.

You know, back when the Red Sox made the World Series in 2004 (they hadn’t won the championship in like.. 70 years or something absurd number), Nike created this commercial, should they have won. It just so happened that they did win, breaking the curse. Nike aired the commercial right after they won. It featured a kid at a baseball game with his dad in the 1940′s cheering on the game.. then a young man cheering them on in the late 50′s.. then a middle aged man with his family in the 60′s… you know what, fuck it, i’ll just link the commercial:
http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=I2JbRYrmf74
my point in bringing this up? i know that i’m going to live a very long life thanks to this commercial. i’m going to be that boy, that man, that husband, that grandfather.. i’m going to be him. i’m going to live decades watching this team come so painfully close.
and then finally, one year, we’ll assemble the team. the team that will do it. i’ll watch them gel in the preseason. i’ll watch them go through ups and downs, my weathered skin stretching as my hands grasp my wheelchair in anticipation of each pass. i’ll watch them make the playoffs as a top seed. i’ll watch them steam through the western conference, each playoff series somehow more exhilerating than the last. overtimes, game sevens, they have everything, and the canucks somehow win.
and then they’ll get to the cup final. whoever the best team in the east is, that’s who they’ll face. the first 6 games will be split. epic. hard fought. blood. sweat. everything. it will have everything. and it’ll all come down to the final game. years, decades of anticipation. dedication. it all comes down to game 7.
and the night before game 7, i’ll die of a god damn fucking heart attack.
god i hate being a canucks fan sometimes

we want the leafs to lose again this year so that we have the best draft selection so that maybe we can win next year. ugh. not since ’67.

#9 – I’m glad to hear that hockey in Vancouver is doing so great, I was always under the impression that with the warmer weather (at least than what we have here in the East), people would be more tempted to spend time outdoors than indoors at GM.
#8 – Same issue in Montreal and Toronto.
#3 – Your thoughts on Matts Sundin?
#1 – Since the Canucks entered the NHL, as Matt says, Leafs
and Canucks equal 0-0 in Championships. Final series apprearances, Canucks 2 (1994 and 1982), Leafs 0
To Matt, I believe the Red Wings have a total of 11 cups all-time, and four since 1967. Still an impressive and enviable total.
Living in the East, I don’t get to see the Canucks much on TV and on Eastern rinks, but one of the best games I ever saw was the seventh game of the 1989 first round series between Vancouver and Calgary. Excitement at its best. The Canucks were the underdog and fought hard and did everything right EXCEPT get that final overtime goal to reach round two.

That is an accurate list. Also we have an uncanny ability to allow multiple goals in under a minute. Just for the record I’ve haven’t been off the bandwagon ever. All I want is an honest effort from them. That is something that has not been happening the last few games.
Good list Allie

I think Mike’s pre-Game 7 prediction is too positive. I think it would be more accurate to believe that a nuclear bomb will go off, wiping out every Canucks fan living in the city. The Canucks would then proceed to win the Stanley Cup and dedicate it to the memory of the city of Vancouver.
The next season, the NHL will move the Canucks to Houston.
I can think of another point to add to your list:
-Every 10 years we have to re-buy all our merchandise because the team has changed all its colors and logos again.

You’re so right about the Toronto vs Vancouver part…but Vancouver did win the Stanley Cup once…just under a different team name.

“beat down scalpers over the head with a bat and run.”
Can’t help think there’s a tom boy residing in you
You consisted ½/½ as a child, 1/3 as a teen, now as an adult 1/4. Please don’t take my rubbish too serious, as I admire your good sence and reason on this site.

Tyler, if that’s the case, you need to get out to games more often because we need our Nucks to win!
I remember cheering for Gino too… aww I miss him.
Matt, but see, at least you guys did win the Cup at some point. Canucks fans are still yearning for that sweet sweet gift from Lord Stanley. And shush, none of your Red Wings propaganda around here!
Chris, I suspect that GM Place and the Canucks will always sell out games. People have been consistently paying for their mortgages with the sales of their hockey tickets. I would suspect it’s always going to be a business, even if they’re not doing well. Look at the Leafs, they’ve been doing bad for the last 20 years and they still sell out
Mike… LOL. I totally laughed out loud when I read that. So true, SO true.
raymi, hey thanks for dropping by!
I think that St. Louis will have a pretty good chance of picking up Tavares for 1st Round draft pick, but ya never know! Sorry to hear you’re a Leafs fan
Jean, nope, hockey is still doing amazing in this city. Mats Sundin.. well, I think he’ll still come around but it’s going to take him a while. I’m not sure he’s the messiah everyone is making him out to be though
UD, YES! I totally forgot the multiple goals in a minute one. You’re right. An honest effort would be nice. I believe they can turn it around.
Captain Geech, that’s also a good possibility
If the Canucks ever move to Houston, well, hey… at least I’d be dead already
And yup, you’re right. There are so many different jersey logos at Canucks games it is kinda funny.
Tawcan, they did but it doesn’t really count!
At least not in my mind.
HexHammer, haha, I’ve definitely been a tomboy my whole life, but I don’t mind too much
