THE TWITTER REVOLUTION
Usually I’m ahead of the curve when it comes to technology and new media… blogging, video games, ICQ, MSN, GMail, torrents, photo blogs, IRC, gadgets etc..
But this time I’m catching up… because I’m waaaaay behind… on Twitter. One of the companies I am interviewing with has using Twitter as part of the job description, so I thought maybe I’d get a head start by spending some time exploring the service.
Yes! I’ve finally created a Twitter account. http://twitter.com/VancityAllie
If you’d like to follow me, just hit up the link above. There’s not much content yet, but it’s a start.
I do have a question for you Twitter veterans… what are the advantages/disadvantages of making your Twitter feed private?
I had resisted Twitter for so long because I was worried it would consume all the time I usually set aside for blogging. So far I’m really enjoying it. It seems to me that Twitter can potentially take away from blogging time, or even the need to blog. What do you think?

here’s some helpful tips from guy kawasaki: http://blog.guykawasaki.com/2008/11/looking-for-m-1.html
i don’t follow all of his tips since i’m not in it for amassing an army of “followers” however he does have some good rules to tweet by. it’ll all depend on your bandwidth to take in your tweeter feed and what your hoping to get from it.
here’s an example of how some ppl used twitter to help in their job search, me included

bottom line, it’s about being honest and a nice person. you are what you tweet. g’luck!

Welcome to the dark side. lol..
I think you have to figure what your gonna be using your account for social networking and or for 100% work related tweets. And with that are you wanting the 3,000 plus followers or a small number of people who you can put a name and a face to?
Private posts work when you don’t want a lot of people reading what you tweet about. When I was in private mode a while back, I noticed I wasn’t getting as followers I am now since I went back to public mode.

Public vs Private.
If it is public, then it is indexable by the Google. Which can be a pro or a con. You can link back to your blog to give it more Google-juice.

There was a good article in the Vancouver Sun in the Business section the other week about Twitter.
http://www.vancouversun.com/Technology/Twitter+away+someone+listening/1238927/story.html
I’m now following you. With the whole private vs. public posts I think of Twitter as a conversation, being public lets others easily participate in yours as they do not have to “request to follow you”
Just have a peak at that article it has the low down on Twitter and basic usage…

I use twitter and love it. I mean the pros is it allows me to
- connect to other like minded people with similar interests
- Ask a large group of people a question I need an answer to
- Keep up to date on fresh topics/news etc both local and international
- Trend things
Cons
- Watch what you say as like mentioned above it can be indexed by Google
- Your say has to be within 140 characters. Some peopel start talking like 13 1337 speak at times
Tips:
Biggest tips I have:
- Include a BIO which also has your Location (even if its general)
- Include a URL
- Be creative with yout Twitter background image. You can see mine (http://www.twitter.com/TylerIngram) for an example
- Use a service such as TinyURL or Snipurl which hashes URLs into shorter length. Remember 140 isn’t very much
- Interact with your followers. Don’t just spam us with crap, add to the conversations etc
Anyway I was wondering when you would be joining Twitter. Glad you’re into it now!
Love how I can use Twitter on the web, my iphone and my crackberry if I need it
It’s also a good way to find out who in the neighbourhood is available for coffee/food/beer or even ski/ride!

Agreed, I too used to be up to date in anticipating new media. Probably started losing ground after finishing college and frequenting Facebook less and less. Although I’ll probably be on it again when I come back from Whistler (leaving tomorrow morning, SO STOKED) to upload pics. Can’t wait to see your beloved city, hope the snowfall surpasses the forecast!

Twitter could never take away from the need to blog because of the 140 character limit. It’s more or less one sentence. What it does though is allow you to link to your latest blog post, which in turn notifies all your followers! It’s basically another way to get more traffic to your blog, and possibly more subscribers.
Now all you need is a nifty twitter plugin on vancitycallie.com so we call all see your latest tweets!

nguyen duong, thanks! Great link.
Kimm, yeah I don’t care about the number of followers… I’m just making it my personal Twitter account. Any work-related thing will be on a totally separate account. I don’t plan to linking myself to my work so I can keep the personality of my blog “real”.
Parveen, good point. I followed you
Aidan, I can’t believe the traction Twitter is getting these days!
Tyler, that’s a really great breakdown and some great tips! I love using it on my BBerry too
Tim Z, it’s true, I’m using Facebook less but it still has its uses! How did you like Vancouver?
Dan, yes I find the character limit both refreshing and frustrating! What Twitter plugin do you recommend?
Lindsay, yay hi! Followed too
Tawcan, yes sir
