A WEEKEND OF D-I-Y BEDROOM FURNITURE
If you can’t buy it, make it!
We spent months looking for the exact furniture that we wanted, but nothing surfaced. Despite checking almost a hundred furniture stores in Vancouver (and calling others in nearby cities), we just couldn’t find a good match.
Okay, so we’re not *making* furniture, but we did find what we wanted in the style we were looking for… we’re just going to strip the furniture down and re-paint and re-finish it.
Thanks to Craigslist, we managed to pick up some very good quality furniture at bargain basement prices (we’re talking under $100 per piece). I love sticking to our budget!
We managed to find a lingerie chest with the exact dimensions we were looking for. We also found two gorgeous night tables.
We went to Lee Valley hardware and picked up some gorgeous new matching handles for both the lingerie chest and the night tables. Pics coming soon (those are the old handles).
This weekend we sanded down every imaginable side of the furniture (phew!) and primed it.
The final look will be all antique white paint, and matching French handles. I’ll definitely post photos when finished! Next to find… a king bedframe, and the rest of the decor (lamps, curtains, etc).
How did you spend your weekend?

That is so impressive Allie! You put so much time & attention to detail, whether it’s cooking or DIY furniture.

Nice DIY furniture. For a second there I thought you were going to build from scratch! Nonetheless very impressive. It can be very hard to stick to your budget so good on you for that. As for the weekend I had one last goodbye to summer bbq on Saturday and most of Sunday spent cleaning up and winding down and preparing for the workweek.
I can’t wait to see the photos of the finished product

Normally I’m not one who likes painted wood but from the pictures so far, they look amazing.
I spent my weekend winterizing the garden and being glued to the tv watching the 4 football games and the radio for a US college football game.

Hmm, Lee Valley’s a favourite of mine. They just opened in Victoria, but we’ll still continue to order most items from Vancouver s that location has more stock.
Nice finds, especially the tall chest! The sidetables have some lovely lines in the tops, skirts and legs. Don’t feel guilty about painting them.
Let me know if you ever desire a 1890s Canadiana oak side by side, or either a Mission or T-backed oak master dining chair from the same period. All three for sale and being stored in my laundry room! Have lots of other stuff as well…do a bit of collecting myself.

The finished plan for them sounds amazing! I love the sort of look you’re going for, and can totally see it working! Great finds on Craigslist!

Heihei Allie, seems like you had a lot of fun. The night tables look wonderful already. Wish I was as creative as that. BTW how do you do to take those wonderful pictures, looks like years of practice. Check out my homepage to find out what I did last weekend

wow Allie is there anything you can’t do? this looks incredible. i can’t wait to see the finished result. It took my husband and I forever to find the right furniture for our place so I know how daunting that task is. What is the overall look of your place – french vintage as well?

I love rocking the DIY…though I have scars on my hands from a steep learning curve. Looks like you’ve got more handywoman in you. Have fun with it.

Ooh I’ll have to check out Lee Valley when I’m in Vancouver next. I have a two pieces of furniture in the garage…all sanded and ready to be painted. My husband says I can’t bring anything else home until they are done. How rude! Love the curves on those bedside tables.
