WE’VE COME A LONG WAY BABY…

Monday, November 30th, 2009

I finally had a chance to edit the very mini HD snowboard video from our first day of the season at Whistler. It’s always embarrassing posting videos of yourself from the first day of the season, because… quite frankly… you look silly on video with shaky legs and not-quite-there-yet balance. Nevertheless, please do watch this video and feel free to have a chuckle :)

Whistler Blackcomb 2009/2010 Season

My legs are STILL sore from last Sunday. Song from Chixdiggit, filmed entirely hand-held on a Nikon D90 at Whistler Blackcomb. Click the video above!

In other news, I am very happy to say that this blog has come a long way since I started it just over a year ago! It’s been a fun ride, and I’ve really enjoyed meeting bloggers from Vancouver and around the world… exploring new places, sharing my photography and video, and frequently embarrassing myself on my blog.

Bear with me, I’m going to toot my own horn for a paragraph. I can’t help it! I can’t believe it’s been a year since I started the VancityAllie blog (although I’ve been blogging since I was 12 years old)…

In the past year, the blog has really surpassed my expectations and we’ve hit 1,632,517 unique visitors over the past year and 2,466,670 page views! 16 HD videos, over 1400 of my own photos uploaded, and a Twitter account with nearly 3,000 followers! We’ve got great rankings on Google and are averaging 100,000 to 300,000 unique visitors a month depending on content and time of year.

P.S. Did you enter the Westbeach contest below? We already have 114 entries!

Okay, now that that is out of the way…

I’m really excited about some of the trips we have coming up this December and next year. I’ll have lots more on the blog… more videos, more photos and more contests! But don’t worry, I’m still the same old me… clumsy, nerdy, and prone to ramble…

Hope everyone is excited for the Holiday season!

Update (November 30, 2009 10:30 AM PST): I will be doing the draw tonight for the Westbeach outerwear and post the results tomorrow. Stay tuned!

FIRST DAY OF THE SEASON AT WHISTLER AND A WESTBEACH CONTEST

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

It’s been dumping snow here in BC, and for the past 3 weeks I’ve been DYING to strap on my board and get out there for some snowboarding… but I’ve been sick and low on energy lately. After waiting 3 weeks and just not being able to stand it anymore, Allan and I finally got up to Whistler Blackcomb on Sunday for some FANTASTIC boarding. Although I couldn’t do more than 3-4 hours on the hill, we definitely made the most of it.

So much snow!

It has snowed 259cm in the past week at Whistler, and even though it’s been snowing all the way through the week, we still got an extra 20 cm for our first day of the season yesterday. And it shows.

A blue sky powder day?

The runs were ridiculously powdery, even the groomers… although we ended up riding knee-deep untouched powder in the trees all day.

Allan in the gondola

Allan had a great time too… he didn’t get a chance to ride his new board, but he was wearing a perma-grin on his face all day… despite this very sombre-looking gondola shot.

Me in the gondola

I was stoked on the new Westbeach outerwear this year, although my new white helmet hasn’t come in yet so it looks kind of funny with my green helmet from my old outfit of past years. I rode my new Burton Supreme boots and my new Burton Malolo… and let me just say…

Rockin' the Westbeach and the Malolo

… riding my Malolo in the trees all day let me know that the ‘Lolo was definitely the right choice for me. Oh man.

Me, very far away...

Here I am in the trees… far, far away!

Even the birds were enjoying the day..

Did I mention that it was sunny and blue skies for most of the day? We really lucked out! Even the birds came out to play in the snow.

For the readers of VancityAllie.com, I am happy to present a contest to win some brand new spankin’ outwear from a fantastic local company:

BEFORE AND AFTER: LIVING ROOM PHOTOS

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

Continuing our little apartment makeover series, today’s post is about out Living Room! To see the previous Sports Room one, click here. I’m also including our bathrooms since this is a fairly short post.

Living Room Before

To be fair, the “Before” picture isn’t really accurate. Our living room didn’t look like that all the time before :) … this was in the midst of our craziness preparing for the party and getting the apartment ready. The major changes to the living room were the lamps, the framed photograph, a side table, a new coffee table, and well… cleaning up. We had our sofas from last year and the TV and swiveling TV mount about 6 months ago.

Living Room After

Nevertheless, here is our “After” photo. Much cleaner, better lighting and some small design additions. Leather sectional and Brown Microfiber ‘Nest’ chair from Urban Barn, Vancouver. Floor lamp and table lamps are both Robert Abbey Fine Lighting “Porter” polished nickel lamps, from Chintz & Co.

Sitting and TV Area

Noguchi coffee table from the Modern Source. Samsung TV and Sony surround sound, I believe both were purchased at Future Shop. Photograph is my own (see below) and cheap frame is from IKEA :)

Vancouver Skyline from Stanley Park

Framed photo.

Lounging Area

Our lounging area! I really love the Nest chair… Allan and I use it for watching TV, playing video games and cuddling… it really fits two people perfectly who want to cuddle and watch TV at the same time… it’s kind of a hybrid between a bed and a couch.

Bistro Table

Aluminum Side Bistro Table from Urban Barn. Here’s the Porter table lamp. Silk flowers from Thomas Hobbs, with two of my favourite cookbooks :) … Gordon Ramsay 3 Star and Araxi’s cookbook.

Fish Tank

Our fish tank! Finally cleaned up a bit and the plants are really starting to grow with the new light and CO2 reactor I spoke about in a previous post. In fact, if you check that post and look at the tank now… you can really see how much plant growth there is! We’re really trying to aquascape it to look like a real landscape… almost like something out of the Lion King. Stay tuned, I’m hoping the tank gets better and better. In other news, since the aquarium is open on the top, I’m really happy no one spilled a drink into it at the party! :)

Computer Setup

Here’s my computer setup… dual Samsungs and the Logitech diNovo keyboard set and MX Revolution mouse. I’ve had these for ages and seem to just keep replacing them I like them so much.

Master Bathroom

I thought I’d include the bathrooms too since this is a bit of a short post. Here’s our Master Bathroom. Brown towels and bathmats from The Bay (Distinctly Home) and photo frames from Walmart. Photos in the frames are below.

Curled Leaf Tofino Leaves

Framed photos.

Guest Bathroom

Here’s the guest bathroom. Towels and bathmat from The Bay (Distinctly Home) and photo frame from Walmart. Photo in the frame is below.

And that’s it! What do you think of our living room makeover?

RECAP IN PHOTOS: OUR BIG PARTY

Monday, November 16th, 2009

There’s no possible way to capture a party properly in photos, especially when you are trying to host one… but we’ll do our best here. Thanks to John Biehler for graciously taking some photos during the event… they turned out great! Below you’ll see a mix of my photos and John’s photos. Hope you enjoy!

As mentioned before, this past Friday, November 13th was my birthday party (on my actual birthday) as well as our (Allan and I) housewarming party. A 2-in-1 party that was a lot of fun to prepare for and host.

Party Pics

I would say that it was a success! Allan and I sat down and did the numbers. Over 230 people attended… a 50L of Granville Island “Island Lager” (approximately 146 bottles of beer… thank you Matty and Granville Island Brewery!) completely tapped, an additional 150 bottles of beer consumed, 4 x 1.75L bottles of Grey Goose, 4 bottles of Zaya rum, 4 boxes of Patron tequila, 4 bottles of Giffard’s Manzana Verde, a bottle of Hennessey XO cognac, Jameson 18 Irish Whiskey, and Glenfiddich 18 Scotch whiskey… completely drained. Not to mention over 40 more full bottles of liquor completely consumed. Phew! I would say we had some heavy drinkers at the party :)

We had the outside patio decorated with white lights, dozens of candles and lanterns, and a couple patio heaters to stay warm! Luckily it didn’t rain so we didn’t need to put up the tent!

The full drink list for the party… (needless to say I spent the entire time behind the bar)

Party Pics

The dress I wore to the party… a pink and purple silk party dress by Meghan Los Angeles. Yes, it’s totally over the top and ridiculous, and definitely a “It’s My Party and I’ll Cry if I Want To” dress… but I couldn’t resist.

Party Pics

Here’s the back of the dress… I really loved the bow and the low back on it!

Party Pics

Here’s the jewelry I wore… beautiful custom-made handcrafted silver crocheted pink Swarovski jewelry by Isabella Diamond here in Vancouver. The ring even lasted through all the drink mixing, haha.

I also got to meet some fabulous bloggers in Vancouver for the first time… thanks to Raul, Liv, Greg, Mozy, Aidan, Kimm, Tyler, John, Jerk, Tawcan, and Josh for coming out!

All in all the party was a lot of fun. We finally finished our apartment (pictures coming soon), and it was great to see all our friends out. Allan and I both had an amazing time. Thanks for reading this huge long post!

BEFORE AND AFTER: SPORTS ROOM

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

One of the best parts of this process of getting our place finished is finally getting rid of a lot of clutter and junk that we had been accumulating that we really never use. We do have a storage locker in our basement so we’ve been using that to store mostly seasonal items, such as our camping gear. It really makes a big difference in terms of space in our apartment!

Sports Room

We finally finished off the “Sports Room”. Really the easiest way to show the change is to show before and after pictures. Here is the “before”. Previously, as you can see, this room was basically a catch-all for our gear. 3 surfboards, 4 snowboards, 2 sets of wetsuit gear, 2 sets of snowboarding gear, 2 sets of ice hockey gear, 2 sets of golf clubs, plus camping gear and miscellaneous items. Phew! It was a lot of stuff to cram into one room.

Sports Room

And here is the “after” photo! We really wanted the room to feel more like a fun, bright place where we could show off some of our gear but also be functional in terms of storing everything.

Surfboard Wall

That’s when we came up with the idea of mounting our gear to the walls. When we originally measured out the surfboards, we realized that Allan’s longboard was WAY too big for the walls. Then we noticed that there was a strip of wall that actually went above the door… and bingo, the surfboards all fit on the far wall.

Hawaiian Gun Racks

We mounted the surfboards using handmade wooden racks made by Hawaiian Gun Racks. They’ve got some padded material on top to keep them from denting the boards, and also a dowel on the end to prevent them from slipping off just in case. They really are both beautiful and sturdy.

Snowboard Gear Wall

We also mounted the snowboards to the other wall. Mounting everything to the walls really freed up a ton of space, and also I think it looks pretty neat. We installed a cabinet to the wall as well, and put all our books and DVDs in there to save space from the living room. We also are using it to hold some of our snowboard gear such as boots and goggles. It’s also a great place to display some photos of some of our adventures.

2010 Men's Supermodel, 2007 Wms Feelgood, 2010 Wms Malolo

From left to right… 2010 Men’s Burton Supermodel, 2007 Women’s Burton Feelgood, 2010 Women’s Burton Malolo… Boots: 2009 Burton Men’s Serow Japanese Exclusive Model, 2010 Burton Women’s Supreme Boots

Hangtime USA Snowboard Mounts

The snowboards were mounted using HangtimeUSA wall mounts. They are plastic mounts that basically hold to the width of the board, so they are easy to pull in and out of the clips. They can also be mounted diagonally. We were really impressed by how sturdy they were, and the mounting hardware that came with them was awesome.

Burton Pillow

We fit a couple more things into the room like my golf clubs and the skim boards, but most of our gear is still tucked away in the closet in that room. We purchased a used red microfiber sofa that I LOVE and a couple lamps to complete the room. Not pictured are all the game plaques that Allan and I have from working in the video game industry… you get one when you “ship” a game. It’s kind of a fun addition to the room.

Sticker Coffee Table

The last part of the room I wanted to talk about is probably my favourite… the coffee tables. We covered one of the coffee tables in all the sporting goods stickers that I had accumulated over the past few years, and that Allan has accumulated pretty much his whole life. There’s a lot of history on that table. Not only is it covered with our favourite brands, but it’s covered in memories of accomplishments, events, special milestones in our lives, and our favourite activities. It really completes the room for us.

So what do you think of the transformation?
