FIRST DAY OF THE SEASON AT WHISTLER AND A WESTBEACH CONTEST
It’s been dumping snow here in BC, and for the past 3 weeks I’ve been DYING to strap on my board and get out there for some snowboarding… but I’ve been sick and low on energy lately. After waiting 3 weeks and just not being able to stand it anymore, Allan and I finally got up to Whistler Blackcomb on Sunday for some FANTASTIC boarding. Although I couldn’t do more than 3-4 hours on the hill, we definitely made the most of it.
It has snowed 259cm in the past week at Whistler, and even though it’s been snowing all the way through the week, we still got an extra 20 cm for our first day of the season yesterday. And it shows.
The runs were ridiculously powdery, even the groomers… although we ended up riding knee-deep untouched powder in the trees all day.
Allan had a great time too… he didn’t get a chance to ride his new board, but he was wearing a perma-grin on his face all day… despite this very sombre-looking gondola shot.
I was stoked on the new Westbeach outerwear this year, although my new white helmet hasn’t come in yet so it looks kind of funny with my green helmet from my old outfit of past years. I rode my new Burton Supreme boots and my new Burton Malolo… and let me just say…
… riding my Malolo in the trees all day let me know that the ‘Lolo was definitely the right choice for me. Oh man.
Here I am in the trees… far, far away!
Did I mention that it was sunny and blue skies for most of the day? We really lucked out! Even the birds came out to play in the snow.

So envious!!! This is the first year in 10 when I haven’t got a seasons pass at Whistler (stupid graduate school in Toronto!) but I’ll be back mid december and would LOVE to rock some new gear on the hill.

I’m in…. Haven’t been on the slopes in years..
However a new gear would be nice… When coaching and or paddling rain gear can only go so far in the winter months.. I found snowboarding pants work wonders. May look silly but it works

Nice new outfit. I was up in Whistler on Sat and it was wicked. For a few runs I was singing “pow pow pow pow” as I turn each time for the entire run. We skipped lunch (well ate during lift lineup) and ended up with like 9 or 10 runs. My quads were basically non functional yesterday and they’re still a bit sore today.

I heard they got 300 cm of snow up at Whistler last week. I can’t wait to head up this week with @GDMitchell. Looking forward to just hitting the powder.
I’m so psyched for this season, it’s just killing me trying to make it through the week. I just want to hit the mountains SO badly.

it was my first day of the season… that was a look of personal reflection. Later it was definitely replaced with the perma-grin like a little kid swimming in jelly beans. Yes, that is what a powder day is comparable to

I love the pictures you got of the snow covered trees! Spectacular!! And your new boarding outfit is awesome!! I’m so jealous of your snow out west!
I’ll be out in BC in February for the Olympics (volunteer at Canada Hockey Place – yay!) I hope I’ll have some time to hit the slopes while I’m there. I usually go out in the spring for the Telus festival but you certainly don’t get the great powder days at that time.

Wow 10 years! Just wondering if you knew that you could replenish the DWR (Durable Water Repellant) with a special wash (ie Nikwax) but it definitely wouldn’t repair a decade of wear and tear.

I love love how the jacket matches the colors in your new board. Im not a snow boarder or skiier but i love going to the family cabin up in Heavenly, Lake Tahoe. Great in the summer for frisbee golf lol great in the winter for sledding!
