TEAM CANADA WINS OVER NORWAY!

I have been looking forward to this game for a LONG time. Although we didn’t win any tickets in the lottery, we wanted to make sure we made it out to a few Olympic events so we didn’t pass up this once in a lifetime event. Of course, the one event we REALLY wanted to make it to was Men’s Team Canada Hockey… and here we are.

Our signs at the Canada-Norway Game

We got fabulous seats at Canada Hockey Place (a.k.a GM Place) and were literally Row 2 right behind the broadcasters. We got all ready for the game… we had our two signs, our flag, our face tattoos, and of course our jerseys.

Canada Hockey Place Line ups Line ups Entering the stadium

It was seriously crazy trying to get into the stadium. There was a huge lineup of people, but fortunately we were at the very front. They made people wait for 2 hours before they could get into the stadium as the USA-SUI game had finished and they needed to clear people out and clean up. It was a long wait, and I was quite afraid someone was going to get trampled… but security and the volunteers kept it under control. They even split the group into two groups as you can see in the photos here.

Roberto Luongo

The crowd went absolutely WILD when Team Canada stepped onto the ice. People were beyond excited to see our Vancouver Canucks goaltender Robert Luongo get the nod to be the starting goalie for Team Canada today. He looked relaxed, confident, and made some amazing saves throughout the game.

Brodeur and Mike Babcock at the bench

Here’s a shot of our amazing coaching staff with Mike Babcock and Ken Hitchcock, and one of our goalies, Brodeur.

Norwegian Goalie

Norway played great… they were fast and had some great goaltending… but not enough to stop Canada.

Me holding the flag Allan is excited

Allan and I were super stoked to be there as you can see from our excited faces here.

Jerome Iginla

Jerome Iginla was a big fan favourite… he played extremely well… hitting, checking, shooting, passing… he played with a lot of heart last night.

Crosby taking the face-off

Sidney Crosby also had a great game and I was surprised and impressed to see how tough he was playing, and with a lot of jump. I have a lot more photos on my Flickr stream.

Wayne Gretzky gets applause

Wayne Gretzky got a huge cheer when they showed him on the big screen. He says he’ll be around watching the games as long as Team Canada is playing.

Donald Sutherland in attendance Team Canada Women's Goalies My coworkers in a box Funny Sign

Also spotted, Donald Sutherland, the two female goalies from Team Canada Women’s, my coworkers watching from a box, and a hilarious sign.

Chris Pronger

Chris Pronger had a great game as well and played solid defence against Norway. He loves to patrol the blue line.

GOAL!!!! Sid and Iginla celebate Iginla's Hat Trick

Canada put a lot of pucks in the net, but here’s another one… we ended up winning 8-0. Sid congratulates Iggy as he gets a Hat Trick! A lot of hats were thrown on the ice.

I am way too excited Allan pretending to operate the broadcast cameras

There was lots of celebrating throughout the night.

CTV broadcasting

It was rad to see the CTV broadcast happening at the other end of the rink. They actually have a collapsible “stage” that pops up and folds down in one minute so that they don’t disturb the view of the fans.

Me and Christian Hrab (Director of Snowboarding Canada)

And to cap off a perfect night, we ran into the Director of Snowboarding for Canada, Christian Hrab, outside BC Place. He was proud to see his team up on the podium, especially to see Mike Robertson get the Silver Medal for Canada. He gave us free tickets to see the Victory Ceremony that night! Thanks Christian! Thank you for being so generous… loving the Canadian spirit around the Olympics!

Barenaked Ladies performing at the Victory Ceremony

And yep, we ended up watching the Barenaked Ladies perform live at BC Place from fantastic floor seats. I’m a huge fan (I even have their Christmas album), and I teared up a few times listening to them play some of my favourites. Allan and I ended up singing the songs all the way home and cheering ourselves hoarse at all the fans out in the city downtown. It was an incredible night, and I couldn’t have asked for anything more.

Great pictures! it was such a good game to be at and I was beyond proud of Lu. I waited about 1.5 hour to get into the stadium. it was well worth it. I couldn’t believe though there were some empty seats – including one next to me.

looks like you had a blast at the medal ceremony. rob and i got dinner and decided to go home to relax and watch the rest of the day’s highlights on telly.

btw – rob and i got our surfboards! looks like we’re planning a quick weekend trip sometime in March. don’t know when yet but if you’re going, let me know. would be fun to meet up.

Looks awesome, so glad that Lu started. I can’t wait to go to men’s semi-final game. :D

AMAZING!!! I was there too (but way up in the 300 level) and it was so exciting. Actually, I’m hidden behind the flag in your photo of the split up crowd across the road :-)

Have better (suite) seats for the Sweden v Germany game tonight which should also be amazing! (but not as good as cheering on Team Canada!)

Ha! Love the “show me your O’ Canada face” sign. What a great experience! I feel like I should’ve tried harder to go, being your next door neighbor and all. The last company I worked for was Canadian and they gave a way a bunch of tickets. Lost my chance when I quit!

  5. The Anthology Says:

Man, you guys had amazing seats. I cannot wait to go to my first Olympic event. Guess what it is… wait for it… Curling!

How much fun will that be? Yay Olympics!

It’s a good thing that I wasn’t at that game. I would have climbed over those people to get to Donald Sutherland. haha.

Looks like you had an amazing time! We didn’t get tix to anything, which is a bummer, so I had really been hoping to win your contest. But I had an amazing Olympic moment on Monday. My hub & I were walking down Burrard and who was walking towards us?? GRETZKY!!! He & his wife and daughter were headed to lunch and were walking amongst the crowd totally un-noticed! I asked him for a pic and he gladly obliged, standing & waiting until I got a shot. We thanked him and he went on his way without anyone the wiser. That was my 2010 Olympic moment, tickets or not!

Awesome post. Go Canada! The Don Taylor sign was hilarious!!! I love the Barenaked Ladies too–my girlfriends and I danced with Ed Robertson at one of their concerts a couple of years ago!He came off the stage right up to our seats! So GORGEOUS!!

  9. La Grenadine Says:

    So beautiful shots !! =)

I think I would have preferred to see the game against Norway, instead of the one against Switzerland. I loved the shootout winner from Sid, but all the missed chances and the cute-sy play by Canada had me bashing my head on the “DO NOT LEAN FORWARD” bar in front of me..

Heck.. I think my buddy beat the crap out of someone out of pure frustration.

    It was that bad.

And very jealous that you got to see BNL. I have yet to check them out live.. I’ll need to next time they swing through town.
