THE EYES HAVE IT
Wednesday, January 26th, 2011Tomorrow is going to be a very important day for me. Early tomorrow morning, I go in for laser eye surgery!
I’m scared. I’m freaked out. I’m nervous.
The truth is, I really didn’t want to get laser eye surgery. I looked into it, I went to consultations at a couple different places, but in the end I decided I didn’t want to. Fast forward a few months later, and I find out that the reason I’ve been getting so many eye infections lately is due to a contact lens intolerance. So… my only choice is to either get laser eye surgery, or stop playing sports altogether. I decided I couldn’t live without surfing, snowboarding, ice hockey, etc… and I booked my appointment for surgery.
There are two different kinds of laser eye surgery, PRK and Lasik. With Lasik, the recovery is much faster. I am, however, getting PRK. It takes longer to recover, but it is much safer if I get hit in the eyes when playing sports. I’ll be getting mine done at Pacific Laser here in Vancouver, with Dr. Lin. He came highly reviewed to me by friends and colleagues, but I’ll reserve my review and update this for anyone curious once the surgery is complete.
It’s supposed to take approximately 4-6 days to be able to function normally again (e.g. read computer screens at work), but it could take months for the eyes to adjust into perfect vision. My tweeting and blogging will need to go on hiatus for a while till I recover… so please bear with me!
It’s a real shame to have to make this kind of expenditure in a year where we are saving for the wedding and really trying to cut down on costs… but I think it’s necessary. I’ll admit, it is pretty exciting to think I will be able to surf this summer without contacts… and enjoy our wedding day and honeymoon without worrying about glasses or contacts.
I’m scared, but I’m also excited. It could completely change my life.
Wish me luck! I’ll see you guys on the flip side.
