A DREAM I HAVE…

Friday, January 15th, 2010

I’ve always been entrepreneurial. I’ve started and owned about 4 different companies, and sold 3 of them… sometimes by myself and sometimes with partners. I’ve always loved the idea of working for myself, and it’s part of the reason why I ended up going to business school in the first place. However, straight out of university I ended up working at a video game company.

I’ve been working in the video game industry in Vancouver for the past 4 years. In all honesty, I can’t imagine myself working in a different industry… at least not for a long, long time. Still, I often find myself thinking of new business ideas, thinking of new opportunities… and how to implement them. The strange thing is, out of all of the ideas… the one I want to do the most is the simplest one.

Chesterman's Beach (North End)

When I was growing up, I always wanted to open a bed and breakfast. In recent years, this dream and desire has intensified, and I am sure now that I would open it in Tofino. I’m so passionate about this idea that I find myself thinking about it almost every night.

I’d like to purchase a home in Tofino, and move out there when I am 40 or 50 to open it as a bed and breakfast. I’ve always known that I wanted to get out of the city and move to the Island when I am older, and it just seems like the perfect plan for Allan and I. Sure, we’d be old farts out there surfing… but we’d have our piece of land, a home, a business to get us by (cost of living is a lot lower out of Vancouver), and we’d get to surf whenever we wanted. And still be close by enough to do trips every once in a while to Mount Washington to get our snowboarding fix.

Bye Golden!

And of course, the next level to this idea is to also own a bed and breakfast on Mount Washington, or a small mountain town somewhere in BC. We’d work at the Tofino B&B in the summer, and the mountain B&B in the winter, and have a manager to run the operations in the low seasons.

It would definitely be a dream come true.

Tofino Waves

I feel like it is well-suited to our skills and interests as well. Both Allan and I love entertaining, we can cook and clean, and we love meeting new people. We’d have a social media strategy for the business, and we’d use our other interests like photography and filming to round out our offering. Allan is great at teaching surfing and snowboarding, so it could be a nice little package add-on with photography included. I could go on and on with more ideas we’ve thought up.

Belgium Waffles with Strawberry Sauce and Bacon

I’d love to think of new breakfast ideas to serve to our guests each morning. There would be numerous personal touches to surprise our guests at every turn, like freshly baked warm chocolate chip cookies with milk before bed on stormy nights.

Amazing bathroom for the Canopy Room

The property would be west-coast style with vaulted ceilings and exposed wood beams, with a focus on earthy elements like wood, stone, and plants.

The details, the palette

However, it would be warm and cozy in décor…  lots of lamps, comfy couches, flowers, and warm colours.

Light on the trees in the morning

Ideally, we’d be living on the beach… or at least with a view of the ocean. The property would be heavily treed, so that guests feel like they are living on the ocean and in the forest at the same time. There would be wooden walkways around the garden where we grow our own produce, surrounded by flowering vines and foliage. The walkway would be lit with lanterns at night, leading to a secluded hot tub where you could gaze at the stars or at your loved one.

At one point, I even spent a few days creating the business plan and some spreadsheets. I crunched the numbers… I did the cashflows and investments required and even detailed licensing and legislature considerations. It looked good on paper. But paper is very different than reality.

I guess we’ll just have to see if the dream ever comes true… :)

What’s your dream?

SURFING IN TOFINO SUMMER 2009 HD VIDEO ROUNDUP

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

Yes, I FINALLY had a chance last night to edit together the ridiculous amount of footage we had from multiple surf trips to Tofino this summer. Sadly, I didn’t have much footage from the spring and we haven’t started our fall and winter surf trips yet, so I thought it would be a good opportunity to combine all the summer footage into one nice tiny package with a bow on top.

So here we go, HD video footage featuring…

  • Several surf trips to Tofino this summer with friends, and by ourselves
  • Underwater housing footage (in-ocean shots)
  • Long lens surf shots
  • GoPro camera footage (camera attached to the board)
  • Us reeling in crabs off the dock and cooking them
  • A few different timelapses
  • Us doing stupid stuff
  • Allan, J, Venus, Trev, and myself
  • Fantastic music from the Planet Smashers (thanks guys, how could I NOT use your song) … :)

HD Video Roundup: Tofino Surf Summer 2009

Click the video above to view. Short vid, about 3 minutes. Safe for work.

It’s about 30 hours of footage rolled into one tiny video. You’ll also notice the underwater housing fogs up… yeah, we accidentally tore the new housing and tried to patch it up with tent glue. Then we used it in the ocean anyway. Well, it leaked. Haha. And uh, I kind of broke my Nikon. Soooooo, now I have to get it fixed.

So stupidity aside, let me know what you think! :)

Thanks for watching!

UNDERWATER HOUSING AND SURFING FOR THE WEEKEND

Friday, September 4th, 2009

It’s Friday. In just a couple hours I’ll be on a ferry heading to my favourite place… Tofino.

The forecast for the weekend: Rain, rain and more rain. But when you’re in a wetsuit, surfing in the ocean in the rain is a glorious experience. Who cares about rain when you are already wet? :)

Rain down the window

Our tarps and tent have always been 3-season and very waterproof, so rain isn’t much of a downer when we are out there. Another side benefit is that there are always less people out camping and surfing when it is raining. I love waking up, hitting the surf on the rising tide (whenever that may be), and then spending the day in the tent with Allan… reading books, watching movies on my Zune, or just being together. I sleep best when there is rain pattering on the tent.

Me and my board

If you’re going to live on the “Wet Coast”, then you have to suck it up sometimes, let everything go… and just enjoy the rain for what it is.

Ewa-Marine U-AX Housing

In other news, this past weekend I picked up an underwater housing on clearance from Leo’s Camera. I purchased the Ewa-Marine U-AX housing for my Nikon D90 DSLR, but really any DSLR should work in this case. Everywhere I looked online the prices were $250-500 US. And amazingly… it was only $175 CAD at Leo’s on Clearance. No returns, but hey… at that price you just can’t say no. (They still have some if anyone is looking for one!)

I actually have a Fantasea (har har) brand camera housing, but it’s quite heavy and bulky… and as I realized, best used for scuba diving. The real problem is I couldn’t adapt the housing from my D50 to the D80 and eventually my D90… and so the video controls don’t work on it.

Ewa-Marine U-AX

So this new housing will hopefully give me the flexibility of changing the video settings and other controls, while still leaving open the possibility of later changing cameras.

So let’s hope the surf videos and photos turn out with this. I’ll let you know the full review when I get back!

Tofino Waves

And yes, that HD surf video I promised… it’s still coming ;) I’ll combine the footage with the stuff I get this weekend to put together something cool.

Hope everyone has a fabulous long weekend!

TOFINO ROUND-UP

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

As promised, here are some of the Tofino pics I’ve been meaning to post from the last couple trips. Bear with me… there’s quite a few!

HD Video of Tofino is still on the way… I’ll probably have a chance to edit it this weekend. In the meantime, hope you like the photos! I’ve still got a few more somewhere that I’ll post soon.

The view from our campsite

The view from our campsite… the ocean, the trees, the sun! That’s why it’s my favourite spot to camp…

A fully stuffed car for car camping

Our car just full of camping stuff… skim boards, cooking gear, coolers, food etc… yep… gotta admit food takes up the most space. Luxury “car camping”, as Tawcan would call it ;)

Citronella candle at campsite

A citronella candle in our campsite… I love to scatter these everywhere around the site. They look beautiful when it is dark out. Plus… a mosquito perimeter… a bonus for those who dislike bugs as much as I do ;)

Making mojitos at the campsite

Making mojitos at the campsite…

Beer braised ribs over the campsite fire

Crista and Trev put together some yummy beer-braised ribs over the campfire…

Mango topped thai coconut halibut

Allan and I make up some mango-topped thai coconut Pacific halibut (caught in Tofino of course, by us)…

Tent City!

Tent City! And tarp city ;) I love how camping is the perfect excuse to wear all sorts of silly non-matched things. Who cares! You’re camping! :)

Ripples in the sand

I love the ripples in the sand.

Splash!

SPLASH!

Shelter Restaurant by the fire

One of my fave restaurants in Tofino… Shelter. We always ask for the best spot in the whole restaurant… the couches right by the wood-burning fire that they stoke all night. Perfect.

Shelter Yam Fries

Shelter’s yam fries (the best in my opinion), and some wings for appies.

Wildside Grill Fish & Chips

We also like to eat at the Wildside Grill for Fish & Chips, grab a lime and mint slushie from the taco cart in the back, and grab a coffee or tea from the Tofitian. The very same plaza also has Live to Surf, which we always check out to see what new surfboards they have in… and try to avoid the mass craziness of people renting 9 ft easy-rider foamie or plastic longboards! Aahhhh!

Long Beach

Long Beach, on a good day.

Ready to surf!

Ready to surf! Yay for Burton snowboarding socks to keep the feet warm just before hitting the cold water.

Allan riding the line

Allan riding down the line… wheee… small summer waves.

Small little waves! Me surfing

Me riding a tiny wave… I look pretty lame here. I wish I had good surfing photos of myself! Of course, when the waves are big and the surf is epic, there’s no one to take pictures of you ;)

Allan and I riding whitewash into the beach

Allan and I riding whitewash into the beach together, hurray! Haha.

Children's Toy Shovel in Sand

A children’s toy shovel left on Long Beach…

Golfing at the Long Beach Golf Course

Golfing at Long Beach Golf Course… 9 holes… lots of fun, with J, Trev, and Crista.

J riding the golf cart

J decides to ride on the front of the golf cart… :P

Me chipping a ball

Allan flying our trainer kite

Allan flying the trainer kite… blue, blue sky.

Me flying the trainer kite

Me flying the trainer kite. Once upon a time we thought we were going to get into kite surfing, but then we realized how expensive the gear was, and that we wouldn’t have enough time to do kite surfing along with all the other sports we love. So it kind of fell by the wayside. Maybe one day we’ll get into it again… maybe kite snowboarding ;)

Allan and I smooching in the water

Smoooooch! Allan and I in the water…

So fun! More photos coming soon :)

A FABULOUS LONG WEEKEND

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

Pretty sure that I surfed my face off this weekend!

It was good to get away from the hot, hot city… and escape to my favourite place in the whole world… Tofino. It was cool, damp, and absolutely fantastic. 4 days of camping, surfing, and friends.

I’ve managed to get some sweet HD video footage together, so I’m going to work on editing all of that this week… so I’ll save a big post for later, but here are a couple images from our weekend.

Long Beach, Tofino

It was foggy in the park pretty much the entire time we were there. Friday night Allan and I had a pretty epic 2.5 surf session till it was pitch black… smooth and glassy waves. Saturday was a 3-hour surf session with friends in the water… a bit foggy, small waves, but pretty clean. Sunday was another foggy session in the water but still good. And Monday afternoon before we left was a small session, not that great, a little blown out…

But does it matter? Nope! Because as long as I am surfing, I am a happy camper ;)

Tofino Harbour

We went crabbing in the Tofino Harbour… and feasted on crabs all night. Delicious! Sooo good. Dungeness and Red Rock.

Mmmm fresh caught Pacific crabs for dinner. Ohhh yeeaaaaaah!!!

We also cooked up lots of delicious meals over the grill, not mention that the campfire ban wasn’t in effect in Pacific Rim, so we enjoyed some huge fires to keep us warm at night.

Starfish at the Dock

Overall, a great weekend. More photos and videos coming soon! And yes, some surf videos ;) I know it’s been a little light around here lately…
